Vales

Located in East Dulwich, London, this Victorian terraced property has undergone a complete rebuild and extension to the rear to create flexible space for a father and two teenage boys to suit their needs now and into the future. The brief sought differing spaces where the family could live and work separately but that were still visually connected.

Unusually there was an opportunity to extend at first floor level and infill between outriggers alongside a pod roof extension which featured an angled roof, cleverly cutting away volume. To connect these spaces vertically and horizontally between the floors, a void has been introduced across the back of the existing property, where perforated metal walkways link the spaces.

The centre of the plan is usually the darkest part, but with the void introduced light permeates through and enlivens it throughout the day. The adjacent rooms celebrate a range of textural contrasts, featuring warmer, opulent finishes such as timber panelling, acoustic felt or ceppo di gre lining the walls and floors.

Externally, materials are composed in a series of datums – timber apertures to the ground floor, which are separated from a new pale brick butterfly roof by a concrete upstand. Above the white brick, anthracite painted Medite panels clad the roof extensions, clearly distinguishing them as part of the roof.

Altogether the scheme sits comfortably and inconspicuously against the white rendered brick and slate tiled roofs of the surrounding buildings, set apart through confident, sharp detailing.
