Trevereux

Trevereux House is a historic property dating back to the 17th century, originally a central lobby inglenook chimney house that has since been significantly extended. The clients, a couple with three young children, expressed a desire to shift from the historic context of the house into a spacious, comfortable home to enjoy as a family and grow into.

Whilst the existing timber framed home has unique historic features, it is compromised by its small windows and excessive circulation around the fireplace. The site offers fantastic and expansive views to the south which are not generally experienced from most rooms inside the property.

The site presented a few challenges on top of its historic foundations, including stepped plateaus with land which falls sharply from the front of the site down to the back. Levels are retained with local stone walling. We developed a scheme that referenced the existing contextual relationship with the continuation of the stone walling into the new extension, connecting it to the levels, land and existing plateau.

The extension is oriented to face the south westerly direction of the main views and linked into the side of the existing house (living room). This created an opportunity to celebrate these three connections — to the existing house, to the view and to the existing elevation, though the introduction of a ‘connector’ of board marked concrete.

Materially the lower level features glass and black aluminium cladding with a limestone floor. Above this linking the upper and lower levels is the ‘connector’ of concrete with clay toned panels cladding the first floor master suite. These contemporary materials all reference the existing building and aim to add another layer to the rich tapestry of extensions across this building.
