Reveal in Roof
Reveal in Roof
The clients’ brief was to provide additional space for their growing family, within the limited confines of a Victorian terraced property in a conservation area, predominantly adapting just the roof to extend into.
The flatness of the existing rear elevation was a defining feature, and so we allowed the new roof addition to sit delicately as an element on the roof. A thin steel reveal provides a lining to the new space, focussing views out from inside.
Internally, ceilings were lowered locally, ensuring the height of the existing windows and the natural light conditions to the first floor bedrooms was maintained. Access to the new floor required the construction of a pop-up extension over the new staircase, engaging the opportunity to introduce extensive glazing with unobstructed views beyond.
Within this space a white-washed oak staircase gently touches the existing half landing, celebrating the threshold between traditional and contemporary. Entry into the new master suite is through a Valchromat-lined threshold further accentuating the shift from old to new. Here, the roof structure is revealed as white-washed oak beams running across the space, culminating in double oak beams linking the large window to the outside.
