Parkland Crematorium

Parkland Crematorium

The existing crematorium is set within 10 acres of parkland in Yeovil, Somerset. With dedicated areas for quiet and private contemplation, the facility and grounds not only provide peaceful space for reflection, but act as a vessel for memory. However, a road carving through the centre of the site split it in two, separating the crematorium from much of the landscape, while additional roads and parking areas prevented visitors from engaging with the landscape and prohibited the site from fulfilling its potential as a valuable community asset.

By raising the chapel up into the canopies of the trees, above the infrastructure and activity at ground level, the chapel now provides extensive views in all directions. Lower levels are solemn and experiential, allowing for reflection with carefully controlled views and light. This dichotomy provides quiet reflective space for visitors while also offering elegant communal space befitting the event of celebrating the passing of life.
