Outhouse-in

This one-bedroom flat is part of a subdivided Georgian terraced shop building that is one of several flats accessed by a hallway shared with a shop below. As a result of erratic previous developments, an existing outhouse extension that was being used as a study/small bedroom was completely disconnected from the main flat and required one to awkwardly pass through the communal staircase to access it.

The brief was to reconnect the outhouse extension and improve the quality of the space. The design utilises a new wall as a connecting device between the spaces, creating apertures that allow light into the dark inner spaces, between bedroom, bathroom and living areas. The connecting wall is an intentionally placed object providing relief from its brickwork environs. As the flat is quite small, connectivity and views through spaces are key: bespoke pivot doors provide flexibility and allow the expansive depth of the flat to be revealed.
