Dormore

When the client began working from home, an appropriate office space was required and as no alternative locations within this compact urban property were viable, the existing attic was an obvious choice. However, for this historic listed property within a conservation area, the existing hipped roof complicated the possibility of altering or extending into the roofscape. But by referencing the single dormer window — we landed a sensitive, historically accurate solution.

The concept for the scheme centred around improving space efficiency. A large opening to the rear was created to maximise light, allow for greater head height and facilitate an intriguing, tactile relationship with the existing prominent brick chimney and parapet. A contemporary anthracite steel element was placed across this void, acting as a sculptural viewpoint.

Internally the roofscape is marked by strong horizontal oak datum, a nod to the externally distinguishing fascia. Achieving adequate head height within the new space was a major challenge, as access to this level from the existing stairwell was directly below the existing hipped roof. Our solutions included a thin folded steel stair, maintaining clearance to the stair flight below and providing a new stepped floor to the study.
